On October 23rd 2013, the students of the MSc in Luxury Management & Marketing visited the Hermès Silk and Leather Factory located just outside of Lyon.
The Hermès visit consisted of: a presentation introducing the Silk Industry, an organised tour of the factory itself, and a presentation of the Human Resources Department of Hermès.
During the tour of the factory, the students discovered how the Hermès production line and distribution process are organised and understood how the detailed-oriented technicians craft the Hermès bags and scarves with carefully selected materials. Furthermore, they grasped the essence of the world-renowned Luxury Brand thanks to their accompanying guide who explained that “Hermès is a house of quality before being a house of luxury, as every single product coming out of the factory must be absolutely perfect.”
Two students of this year’s intake of the MSc in Luxury Management & Marketing provided us with their thoughts on the field trip:
“It was great to be backstage of a major luxury company and it was very insightful as I had no idea how much time and effort was put into the creation of a Hermes scarf”, commented Lily Froehlicher, a current student of the programme. Chao Hsin Lin, also a student of this year's intake, stated that “being able to enter the workshop was one of the most interesting things in our trip. We saw how the technicians produced bags and they kindly answered our questions in order for us to find out more about the production of Hermès bags. This trip to Hermès was overall a great experience for us as it allowed us to really see how a luxury brand works.”
Overall, this field trip was very valuable to the students of the MSc in Luxury Management & Marketing as they not only met with representatives of one of the biggest luxury brands in the world but they also had the opportunity to comprehend how a luxury factory works.
