First Local Chapter of the World Entrepreneurship Forum

In India, 60% of the population depends on agriculture and 70% of the population lives in rural areas. Statistics are very similar in other developing countries. It is therefore imperative to create vibrant yet sustainable business models for rural areas.

According to the United Nations’ Food and Agricultural Organization, “Rural development is more than ever before linked to entrepreneurship. Institutions and individuals promoting rural development agree on the urgent need to promote rural enterprises: development agencies see rural entrepreneurship as an enormous employment potential; politicians see it as the key strategy to prevent rural unrest; farmers see it as an instrument for improving farm earnings; and women see it as an employment possibility near their homes which provides autonomy, independence and a reduced need for social support. To all these groups, entrepreneurship stands as a vehicle to improve the quality of life for individuals, families and communities and to sustain a healthy economy and environment.”

The RWEF India will take place in Baramati, Maharashtra, from July 4th to July 6th 2013

During this 3 day event, speakers will alternate with workshops (allowing  participants to understand the sustainable business models in rural areas), panels of experts (to raise critical issues), experience tours (tour of a model village and textile park) and a cultural gala to showcase Indian rural life and close the event.

Some of the key subjects to be tackled include: Identify Rural Business Opportunity - How can ICT be used for rural development - Linking the world with rural areas - Retention of Man Power in Rural Areas - Inclusion of Self Help Group / Women in Business  - Cottage industry  (technology based) to make people self dependent - Feedback from existing projects on pilot cottage industry (Techno) in Baramati.

The  Environment Forum of India (EVF India)  is organising this first RWEF, with the support of the World Entrepreneurship Forums’s team. Based in Baramati,  Maharashtra State, EVF India is one of India’s pioneering environmental NGOs working in the field of Environmental Education and Sustainable Development.
